Awarded house, in the category "RECONSTRUCTION", where history and modernity blend
Ing. arch. Marián Gombarček
A home where history and progressive modernity blend. This is exactly how the Bratislava House at the Zvonice (Bell tower), winner of the Interior of the Year 2022 competition in the Reconstruction category, can be described. Thanks to precise efforts, it has been possible to remove the long-lasting layers of alterations and combine the distinctive character of the original building with the impressive design of contemporary architecture.
By the time the owners decided to change, the house had already been occupied for several years. However, as the young family grew, they began to realise that the current layout of the space did not suit them and decided to adapt the interior to their needs. The brief was more a debate about the daily life of a large family and their requirements for the future. "From the beginning, we talked about open space and simple materiality, but in principle I had a relatively free hand based on the trust shown to me," says architect Marián Gombarček from the gmb. architectural studio. "The owners had only a few main requirements. One of them was to preserve the original form of the building's exterior; the location of the entrance also remained unchanged. The interior of the house, however, has undergone extensive change."
The main goal of the reconstruction of the two-storey house was the maximum interconnection of space with the elimination of unnecessary barriers and the installation of unusual modern elements in combination with the original ones.
The surface of the door is made in the same wood-decor as the surrounding surfaces and thanks to the hidden frame variant, the passage is not burdened with unnecessary disturbing lines. Inconspicuousness combined with functionality and quality has also been applied in the choice of door hardware. The door is fitted with a MINIMAL handle from the Czech family-owned M&T manufactory, while the brushed nickel finish was chosen from the eighteen options available for the model. "We chose the fittings based on appearance and the MINIMAL handle was chosen for its clean, minimalist design," says Marián Gombarček. Original design and high quality are a priority for M&T, the only Czech manufacturer of designer door and window hardware and a leader in its finishes.
